Typical Community SAT Prep Course Format

5 Session Format (a 6 session format is employed in the summer):

5 Session Format

Session 1: Introduction to the New SAT. Motivational Perspectives, Test format, Guessing strategies, Gamesmanship. Introduction to Techniques in the Math Section and Vocabulary.
Session 2: Review Session 1. The Math Techniques Developed.
Session 3: Review Previous Sessions. Advanced Math Techniques.
Session 4: Review Previous Sessions. Math Techniques for Geometry.
Session 5: Critical Reading Sections. Sentence Completions, and Passage Reading Techniques.

Our focus is always on maximizing student score improvements on the SAT, so this format is more of a guideline, than a clear path to follow. We will adjust the course curriculum to generate the highest score improvement for the group.

The reason we focus on the Math Section is because our techniques are more “remedial” in nature on this section, so score improvements in this area are “easier” to achieve. The problems in the Math Section also count more per question.

The Critical Reading Section, requires skill, and skill takes time to develop. Our techniques for success in this section are not facilitator driven, so once explained during the course, the student can gain mastery over these techniques at home. This is an effective way of minimizing the duration of the course, and maximizing the students’ SAT score improvement at the same time.

Nota Bena: The “new” Writing Section is covered thoroughly in the course syllabus, but is not addressed during class time. Currently, the Writing Section is not helpful for college admissions at 90% of all colleges, does not help students qualify for the SC Life Scholarship, the Palmetto Fellows Award, or NCAA Initial eligibility, or ROTC Scholarships. No one is concerned with your Writing Score at this point.

Of course the question that immediately comes to mind is, “Well, then why change the SAT to include a ‘Writing Section’ at all?” Let me say that the changes were not College Board’s idea. You can specifically thank the University of California school systems for the Writing Section - as they demanded the change.
